Features > Tell Me About Your Character > Andrew Reyes

Your name: Andrew "Dr Rotwang!" Reyes

Location: Bloomington, Indiana

Age: 32

Sex: Muy, muy macho.

Family: I am married, and have a 2-year-old daughter who loves princesses, Barbie, Star Wars and Spider-Man.

Religion: I often respond to this question with "Reformed Andraic Discordianism", which bears a strong resemblance to Pastafarianism only with more neon lights and New Wave music. The highest holiday is Duranmas Duranmas, but I forget when it is.

Political party/affiliation: Ehh, I don't have a political affiliation. I kind of look for the good ideas out of every political view and support or reject them on a case-by-case basis. I seem to agree most often with Democrats and Libertarians, though, so make of that what you will.

Hobbies/Activities: Dude...I love to draw and sketch. I'm no good at it but I keep whackin' at it, because it's fun. I also enjoy writing, and if I were smarter and more focused, I'd be doing it for money.

Education: Man, I didn't so much go to high school as I did attend drama class, with other incidental and required studies in between. After high school, I neglected to go to college for quite some time, partially because I didn't think I could afford it and partially because I became
complacent and used that as an excuse not to exert myself in pursuing my dreams. When I did go to college, I was too old to enjoy it, went to a 2-year college known mostly for its rednecks and its drug-dealers, and came out in the top of my class with a broadcasting degree which I am not using, all the while staring at a loan that I must repay and cannot afford. I really, really feel like I wasted my life in this respect. Don't follow my example, kids: go to college early, then get out and start cracking skulls with your degree.

Just to test the stereotype - Have you ever lived, or are you currently living, in
your parents' basement?
Ha ha ha! Well, I did live with them for a long
time, and my room was in the basement. Does that count? I mean, it's
not like I was in cryostasis or something down there, but I also didn't
have a self-contained apartment or whatever.

What is your favorite way to spend a weekend? Realistically? Getting
out of the house and doing something fun, or hosting friends for social
activities like gaming, watching a movie, lunch or what-have-you. There are
other things I want to do on a weekend, but travel, restaurants and movies
are beyond my budget.

What is the most frightening thing you've ever done? Admit to myself that I have squandered my potential.

Which of your accomplishments are you the most happy with? Her name is Lily, and she loves princesses, Barbie, Star Wars and Spider-Man.

What was your first word? Depends on whom you ask. Mom says it was "more", but Dad says it was either "Dad" or "No". I was there but I don't remember.

What is your favorite word? I have a lot of them, really. I can't pick just one, but "bullhonky" is close to the top.

How many languages do you speak? English, Spanish and a dribble of German.

What is your favorite time of year, and why? Summer. Heat, sunshine, energy, storms, balmy breezes, green leaves, short nights, humidity, mist, the fever-dreams of youth.

What is your most prized physical possession? Hmn. That's tough. I'll answer this by saying that I cannot answer it.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would be more driven -- actually, more applied to what I want. I wouldn't be a shark, an opportunist; I'd be...more dogged, I guess.

Did you have any embarassing nicknames as a kid? No, not really. There was a bully in Mexico who called me "Picasso" because I drew a picture on the chalkboard one day, but I just kind of shrugged it off because he was an idiot.

What was your favorite toy as a child? Star Wars action figures, man.

What makes you cry? I wept like a freaking firehose when my daughter and I first watched Star Wars, and the "Jurassic Bark" episode of Futurama...I can't watch it. The end of it -- okay, I GOTTA MOVE ON TO ANOTHER TOPIC NOW QUICKLY YES THANK YOU I'LL TAKE TWO.

What is your favorite section of the newspaper? The comics. "Foxtrot" and "Get Fuzzy" are aces, and "Close To Home" is shameful, deplorable crap.

Do you have a useless talent that no one else that you know can do? I'm sure my talents are not unique. But I can pick up a book that I've just been reading and start reading again at the EXACT beginning of the next paragraph.

What are three things you can't live without? Freedom, love and humor.

If you could have one superpower, which power would you pick? I would fly. I want the feeling of power and freedom -- the ability to slip gravity's bonds and be beholden to its grasp only by my own will. Also, commuting would cost less.

What did you want to be when you grew up? George Lucas, only with better sense. I would not have given you Jar-Jar Binks, my brothers and sisters.

What is your favorite mode of transportation? I want a flying car.

If you could pick any other time period to live in - including the future - which would it be, and why? I honestly and sincerely often fanatsize about living out my teens and early 20s in the period between 1977 and 1987. The 1930s would've been good, too, working as a pulp SF writer. Plus: Art Deco!

What is one thing that you regret that you would go back and change if you could?
I would've gone to college right after high school, and here at IU. I would've reined in my youth and ridden that sucker like a bull in a rodeo.

What is the one thing you want to do before you die? Be the best father my daughter could ever, ever have.

You've just purchased a small island off the coast of any continent of your choosing, and you are preparing to start your own country there. What does your flag look like? It's purple and has a d20 on it.

Would you like a frosty cold root beer? It's an A&W. Yes, thank you kindly.

Tell us about your favorite RPG character that you've ever played. Man, all I
ever do is GM. Right now, though, my favorite character is a relatively recent one:
Aretas (AIR-tass), an energetic, melancholic, willful and partially mad noble-cum-
adventurer, suitable for fantasy games in the vein of Conan and Sinbad. He is
like Conan, if Conan had been born not on a battlefield but in a glittering palace
of jewels and silks. He tires of life as an existence and wants it to be an
experience, and that means taking risks and shunning wisdom (not hard, since
he IS not right in the head). I have written him up in HERO FREd, Tunnels & Trolls,
Wushu and Over The Edge. I might get to play him soon.

What are your favorite RPGs? Classic Traveller, MegaTraveller, D6, Star Wars: The Role-Playing Game, HERO, Tunnels & Trolls, and some others. Those stand out most.

What was your first RPG session like? A stumbling, awkward attempt at running Star Wars for a half-cousin who really didn't care. It was conducted on the breakfast bar in our old kitchen.

What was your WORST RPG session like?
DM: "You guys fight a hatchling black dragon and kill it! You have more treasure than you can count!"
ME: "Swell. I go home, and start spreading money around town, to help out the economy. Also, I start building a house and chatting up that girl I like."
DM: "Okay! So our adventure starts like this..."
ME: "WHAT?!"

Who is your all-time favorite person to game with? My Wife , Kendra Mealy (friend from HS), Kyle Mayes (best friend), John Buchanan (also best friend).
