Features > Tell Me About Your Character > Andrea Uhde

Your name: Andrea Uhde
Location: Germany, between Hannover and Magdeburg
Age: 31
Sex: Female

Family: 1 brother (37), 1 sister (39), 1 sister-in-law, 1
brother-in-law, 3 nephews. My boyfriend is 36, we’ve been together for 11 years (but don’t live together – yet).

Pets: None. I used to have pet rats, but they always died very quickly and I was always devastated when they did.

Religion: Agnostic Atheist (not sure if there is/are (a) God/Gods, but tend towards saying there isn’t). I was raised a-religious, but I decided that I wanted to be christened and confirmed when I was 14 but gradually lost interest in religion. Nowadays faith or spirituality just don’t matter in my life any more.

Political party/affiliation: Liberal/Leftist/Pirate Party.

Education: Abitur (German equivalent to high school diploma/A-levels), currently studying to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree (in English and German literature and linguistics). After that, I’m going to apply for a Master of Arts programme.

Hobbies/Activities: Reading, participating in the Web 2.0 community, playing WoW

Community service: I’m a registered election worker volunteer.
Just to test the stereotype - Have you ever lived, or are you currently
living, in your parents' basement?
No, but we’ve been gaming
in my boyfriend’s parents’ basement for some time.

What is your favorite way to spend a weekend? Gaming, or
generally spending time with my friends, or just doing nothing/reading.

What is the most frightening thing you've ever done? I underwent LASIK
surgery on both eyes. It was very frightening, but given that my sight is
now nearly 20/20 on both eyes I would definitely do it again.
Which of your accomplishments are you the most happy with? Managing to stop procrastinating, which was the sole reason that I’ve been studying for 12 years without obtaining a degree.

How many languages do you speak? 2 : German (native), English (fluent), Spanish (could hold simple conversation).

What is your favorite time of year, and why? For me there’s something good in every season, but if pressed I’d probably say spring since everything’s green and blooming but it isn’t too warm (like in summer).

What is your most prized physical possession? My gaming books.

What was your favorite toy as a child? Lego. I loved the infinite possibilities. I always built weird contraptions and just watched them run.

What makes you cry? Injustice, or when I feel I’m being treated unfairly or being criticized unjustly.

What is your favorite section of the newspaper? Commentaries. I like reading other people’s opinions on important issues. Sometimes this can get me quite riled up, but it helps me to understand where the other side is coming from in discussions.

What are three things you can't live without? The internet, role-playing games and sushi.

If you could have one superpower, which power would you pick? Flight, either self-powered or by transforming into a bird. When I was younger I always dreamt that I’d fly to school.

What did you want to be when you grew up? When I was younger I wanted to be a secret agent. When I was 15 I wanted to be a biologist, and when I had finished school I wanted to become a computer scientist. I studied computer sciences for 2 years until I noticed I’d rather do something which I’m good at.

What is your favorite mode of transportation? I love my car since it makes me independent. Right now (as of September 2010) I’m in Ireland for an internship, and I really miss it.

If you could pick any other time period to live in - including the future - which would it be, and why? The 1960s, because it was a period where major changes happened.

What is one thing that you regret that you would go back and change if you could? I would have sought help earlier to get rid of my procrastination habit.

What is the one thing you want to do before you die? Live in another city/another country for at least a few years. Maybe that doesn’t sound very impressive or important, but I’ve been wanting to do that since I graduated from school and never had the opportunity so far.

Tell us about your favorite RPG character that you've ever played. My favourite RPG character is a character from Vampire: The Masquerade (Revised Ed.).
His name is Jack Monroe, and he is a Tremere hacker/investigator/infiltrator.
He knows Techomancy (the art of influencing machines and computers
with blood magic), and he has “somehow” (*cough*evilGMplot*cough*)
contracted Vicissitude. He suffers from multiple personality disorder, and
his alter ego Sean Hennessy is absolutely ruthless, immoral and always
trying to thwart Jack’s efforts to “do good”. Yeah, the guy has issues.
We are currently playing in New York City, using the NY by Night sourcebook. Jack has become good friends with David Morgan, the Malkavian Scourge, and a Tzimisce who claims to be a loyal member of the Camarilla. Sure.

Most of the time Jack tries to balance his duties towards his clanmates and working for his coterie, who, right now, are acting as Deputies to the Sheriff.

What are your favorite RPGs? Vampire: the Masquerade, Mage: the Ascension, Call of Cthulhu and DSA (Das Schwarze AugeThe Dark Eye, a German fantasy RPG).

What was your first RPG session like? It was a one-on-one scenario of MERP (Middle
Earth Role Playing) which my brother GMed for me. We were at my parents’ place, and I played a Dunedain Ranger named Arwen Ethagorn (I was 14 and had just finished reading LotR for the first time). I still have very fond memories of this.

My first gaming session as an adult was a VtM game with a few people I’d met while I was studying computer sciences. It wasn’t very impressive in itself, but it was what got me hooked – I bought my first gaming book shortly afterwards (it was the VtM Revised corebook), and I still game with some of the people.

What was your WORST RPG session like? The worst session I ever had was at a convention where it took two hours (!!) just to create the characters, and the “scenario” was horribly railroaded. It would have been a complete waste of time if it hadn’t been for my mates, who kept making fun of the GM without him noticing.

Who is your all-time favorite person to game with? Almost everyone I game with on a regular basis I’m also very good friends with and I like to game with all of them equally (no, really!). I also love gaming with my brother.
